The Decorah Genealogy Association

The Decorah Genealogical Association was established for the purpose of:
  • Maintaining a genealogy research center in the Decorah Public Library which is open to all interested persons
  • Conducting activities that encourage and promote interest in genealogy
  • Assisting individuals and groups in their genealogical research
  • Encouraging the researching and writing of Family Histories
  • Collecting and preserving genealogical and historical data on our ancestors for our descendants
  • Communicating with and exchanging information with other genealogical organizations
  • Collecting and publishing materials in genealogy research
 

 
The Decorah Genealogy Association is a non-profit tax-exempt organization.  Membership is open to all persons interested in genealogy who subscribe to the purposes of the association.  There are three different membership levels: Individual, Household, and Supporting.  Please submit family group sheets and any other information on ancestors you are researching.

  Meetings  
 
The Decorah Genealogy Association meets jointly with the Winneshiek County Historical Society on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 pm.  Meetings are held in the Library Program Room - Lower Level of the Decorah Public Library at 202 Winnebago Street.  An interesting, informative program is planned for each meeting.

Newsletter
The Decorah Genealogy Association publishes a quarterly newsletter in conjunction with the Winneshiek County Historical Society entitled "The Decorah Area Diggers."  The newsletter is mailed to all members.  Newsletters are also exchanged with other genealogy societies.

Queries

Members will research and answer all queries.  A donation of $15.00 per hour plus expenses is suggested for research.  Send your queries and a self-addressed stamped envelope to:

Genealogy Research Center
The Decorah Genealogy Association maintains a Genealogy Research Center in the lower level of the Decorah Public Library at 202 Winnebago Street in Decorah, Iowa.  The entrance is on the east side of the building.

No fee is charged for use of the library.  Contributions gratefully accepted.

The Decorah Public Library and Genealogy Research Center are conveniently located across the street from the Winneshiek County Courthouse.

The Decorah Genealogy Association is a chapter of the Iowa Genealogy Society.

Genealogical Materials Available For Sale
The Decorah Genealogy Association has available for sale a number of items to assist individuals in their genealogy research.  The items include:
 
  • Reprint of Sparks History of Eminent Men 1875
  • Reprint of Bailey's 1913 History of Winneshiek County (out of print)
  • Reprint of Alexander's 1882 History of Winneshiek County (out of print)
  • Cemetery Lists of many cemeteries in Winneshiek County
  • Plat Book reprint of Decorah and Winneshiek County for 1886, 1905, and 1915
  • Genealogy forms to aid genealogists in researching and compiling information
  • Sesquicentennial Biography Book 1996
  • 1886 Census of Civil War Veterans


The Decorah Genealogy Association's Research Center is air-conditioned.  In addition to research materials and work areas, the Center also has a comfortable sitting area.  So even if you are not interested in doing genealogy research at the moment, stop by, sit and relax for a while.  We would love to meet you.
